In my opinion, we have a police force that reacts aggressively towards a subgroup of our population that is narcissistic, subversive and have a disregard for the law. The problem is cultural from both sides.
The police are trained and paid and on the job. When they are aggressive they frighten people and cause an aggressive response in turn, especially if they are over reaching and bullying. I don’t think the power equation that we are seeing, when people react in outrage and fear is at all equal on both sides. The police are paid by the citizenry to yes, enforce the law – but there are times when the law they are enforcing may be questionable. Also a lot of times they are enforcing questionable “mandates” and “guidelines” that are NOT the law.
That pregnant mom may have been surprised that her Facebook post was “illegal” but the way the police handled it AT ALL (dont care if she said later they were “nice”) was absolutely ridiculous. There is no need for a home arrest for these kind of infractions – it is not justifiable. It is the early jackboot on the collar of the population, and to say that there was equality in that equation or that she is somehow a narcissist is in my opinion simply wrong headed. Leaders naturally emerge in times of trouble – leaders are not necessarily by definition “narcissists” and I believe that is the cultural key – the shaming of people willing to speak up- that is allowing things to happen that are causing Australia to appear as though it is an island dystopia.
I hope Aussies will support their fellows pushing back against overreach, even if not always being perfectly polite to the police ends up happening along the way.

You have to understand the mindset of the police in Australia to understand why they act like that. They are at 10 on the dial because they know they are at grave risk of this whole thing boiling over, they need to “save lives”, so they are intimidating people with full force as often as they can to “send the message”. They think they are doing the right thing, and you wont be able to convince them otherwise. Only once the command group is convinced to ease the pressure will it back off, but I think they know full well they don’t have very much left in the arsenal if people do kick off. A significant number of people protesting will cause them to back off, but they will happily pick on pregnant mothers all day if it reduces the number of “incidents” they have to attend to. Its hamfisted and bullyish, completely cowardly and ridiculous but it will keep on like this until people simply walk out of their houses and tell them to bugger off.
It’s exactly the case of which CS Lewis wrote “Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive”.

From my perspective .. the police are doing what they have been trained and paid to do .. To serve and protect the criminals in power .. THE END ..
