Space Force Personnel Will Be Called “Guardians” (Of The Galaxy?)

“The Army has soldiers. The Navy has sailors. The Marines have… marines. The Coast Guard has Coast Guardsman. And as of Friday, the Space Force now has “Guardians.”

In a speech at the White House on Friday, Vice-President Mike Pence was totally serious when he made the formal announcement that “Guardians” would “ensure that America remains as dominant in space, and from space, as we are on land and sea and air.” ”

    • I thought that name was odd too. I’ve no idea what they’re trying to imply.

      • Garuda is a storm bringer and has dominion over weather. His stone is the emerald.

Throughout the Mahabharata, Garuda is invoked as a Symbol of impetuous violent force, of speed, and of martial prowess.

Powerful warriors advancing rapidly on doomed foes are likened to Garuda swooping down on a serpent. Defeated warriors are like snakes beaten down by Garuda. The field marshal Drona uses a military formation named after Garuda. Krishna even carries the image of Garuda on his banner.

          • Interesting, Walter. Thanks! In “Western” symbology, the eagle represents Enlil/Satan, and the serpent represents Enki/enlightenment?

            • Let’s not forget the US may not be above making its own “Supersoldiers” like China – probably already has. The Guardians as the newest force may well be composed of beings unlike the rest of us, who knows, the future is long. Other thing: out of over 400 aspirants, apparently only 15 made the cut to be a Guardian. Really does sound a bit like a movie no?
One other thing: As the newest command group, the Guardians are considered the most loyal to the CInChief, along with the Air Force for some reason.

              • Apologies – no offense intended!

                • … because they are those whom we will CUStos out when the aliens invade. 🙂

                    • … or it could be a nod toward Hellenismos … see also the use in the Greek πιστοφύλαξ … see also the Orphic Hymns trans. by Thomas Taylor (1792). One caution, Taylor was a thoroughgoing Neoplatonist. The Orphic Hymns … if you have an interest in peculiar forms of mysticism. Also see his translations of Porphýrios (Porphyry), Iámvlikhos (Iamblichus), and Plôtínos (Plotinus) along with his commentaries on each. When the early church fathers went after competing thought they often went after the Orphic Texts. If you’re attracting flak …

                            • … to reply to your question FiatLux … by way of a confusion (see Richard Rufus of Cornwall, In Aristotelis De generatione et corruptione, a technical term meaning to fuse together – those pesky Scholastics) of Benjamin Franklin and James Mill (father of John Stuart) … “The people themselves, Sir / Madam, if they will take on and execute (no pun intended … well, maybe a small one) their responsibility.”

                          • From the (Microsoft) first person shooter Halo series. Guardians were featured in the story of Halo 5 Guardians release Oct 27 2015.
