For anyone wishing to pursue the concept of Affektenlehre further I would suggest the Netherlands Bach Society’s web site. If you click on the ” All of Bach ” link it will bring you to a page with a few dozen videos of live performances. With that are descriptions of certain passages explaining the intent of the music, hinting at Affektenlehre. I became fascinated with Joseph’s introduction of the concept and worked to understand it on an intellectual level only to discover I’ve understood it instinctually for many years !
