The Culture series of novels by Iain M. Banks.

Dr Farrell & Friends may I recommend to you the most excellent “The Culture” series, a science fiction series of novels written by the late Scottish author Iain M. Banks.

The stories center on the Culture, a utopian, post-scarcity society of humanoids, aliens, and very advanced artificial intelligences living in semi-anarchist habitats spread across the Milky Way galaxy. The main theme of the novels is the dilemmas that an idealistic hyperpower faces in dealing with civilisations that do not share its ideals, and whose behaviour it sometimes finds repulsive. In some of the stories, action takes place mainly in non-Culture environments, and the leading characters are often on the fringes of, or non-members of, the Culture, sometimes acting as agents of Culture plans to civilise the galaxy.”

Last year I read an article that mentioned this was Jeff Bezos’ personal favorite book and book series.

      • I found his character development to be a little weak, but then again his main thrust was an overarching exploration of just about everything else.

A gem of a fellow, gone much too soon. He was aware of his impending demise and wrote of it in advance with measured, calm words.
