I seem to have a problem with my right hand little finger on the first joint… for the past few days if I move it a certain way, it feels like something inside has been “stretched”, accompanied by a kind a fiery pain. There also looks like a small bruise or purplish area. Anyone know what this might be?

Sorry to hear that, Dr Farrell. Could it be tendonitis? Have you tried taping the little finger to its neighbor and applying an ice pack?
-
Yea I’ve taped it up, and from what I read after you suggested this, is that the symptoms do seem to be the same. Thanks, I appreciate it… no Bruno practice for a spell… 🙁

Great. You’re welcome. I and – no doubt – Bruno hope all is back to normal in no time.

My experience with this type of injury is to be very careful for at least 1 week. Then once healing takes hold gently exercise the area but not too much. Increasing turmeric also helps. I have slight ‘tennis elbow’ which I never had before…

Arnica is good for the joints.

… see Trigger Finger Symptoms (stenosing tenosynovitis (stuh-NO-sing ten-o-sin-o-VIE-tis) occurs when inflammation narrows the space within the sheath that surrounds the tendon in the affected finger.) … not fun … have this in my left thumb.

I’m curious: Do you get the bruise/purplish part of the symptoms?
-
… when it first occurred, but it resolved and has not returned in 6 months or so.

I think the most obvious possibilities, besides arthritis, have already been mentioned. I’d keep an eye on the bruised/purple part and get medical advice if it persists or worsens. I agree about arnica and ice. Some of the other things I use for pain in fingers/hands when it flares up (arthritis, fibromyalgia, and tendonitis-like pain): pain creams with camphor and menthol if you can take the smell; Aspercreme, which is odorless and uses trolamine salicylate; lidocaine cream; acupuncture. They also sell over-the-counter pain patches, which can be particularly useful if you need to wrap up a finger to keep it from moving. Patches that are too large can usually be cut to size. Personally, I like a brand called “Salonpas,” which I can get in the typical chain drugstores or order online, but there are various types and brands. Salonpas patches have something akin to Bengay in them, I think. At the risk of stating the obvious… if you do put arnica or anything else on the finger, you probably don’t want to be petting or feeding Shiloh with that hand.
