It seems to be an almost ubiquitous problem that regulators of all kinds, rather than protecting the public interest, are really there to run cover for the criminals in charge 🙁

Bingo! Said criminals usually being the industries these agencies are charged with regulating. The regulators are the advance guard to protect the same corporate interests that, via campaign “donations,” largely determine the legislative agenda. If there’s ever a real, good-faith rethink of U.S. institutions, the capture of political decision-making by executive/regulatory/administrative agencies needs to be addressed so that it can be eradicated and prevented.
