I think that the media lacks the understanding of modern naval warfare. The boats that are in the n Korean navy are old diesel electric Soviet boats of the late 50s and 60s. These boats were often crude and very unsafe by US Navy standards, however they were a credible threat. The same philosophy was considered about the Soviet main battle tanks the T62 and T72 but the allied powers of the cold war feared them because the Soviets would deploy thousands of them if war broke out in Europe. So I believe the media doesn’t fully understand the nature of submarine warfare and what it means to field submarines to kill surface targets.
