It takes about 15 to 18 days for a train to carry goods from an eastern Chinese city like Shanghai to Germany and surrounding areas. The cost is about $5,000 to $6,000 per 40-foot container. Shipping by sea costs about half that but takes almost twice as long. By air, the shipment would take a few days but cost more than twice as much.

The US technology industry focus may be shifting towards hardware…. example: Apple. This is interesting because much of the media noise is about the user interface and software driven world, when behind the curtain the money is going to hardware.

Hey Cara.. hardware in IT is going yo disappear. All computers are going to become virtual machines in the cloud. Users will have ftont end clients and access ppints. All the data and processing power will be elsewhere.. accessef by “clients”..mark my words.
-
Well, perhaps user hardware will become more “locked down” but the cloud on the backend with all its data as well as the network for delivery of the content to the user will still need hardware and lots of it
-
delivery network will ‘eventually’ by quantique and the hardware infra will be unnessary 🙂 but thbats not for this decade

I don’t know how far apart they are but it would be interesting to see a map plotting their locations. Knowing the geometry of their deployment might give more indications of what they are for. Does anyone have a map that they’re updating with locations of these things?

What I find most astonishing are the frequent comments that seem to indicate a prevailing view of the central bankers that the world of monetary policy is decoupled from real world factors, at least in the models they use. This is a speech given by Claudio Borio, Head of the Monetary and Economic Department at the BIS (Bank of International Settlements) in Lonon recently (22 September). It looks at inflation and questions the assumptions that are used to manage it by central banks.
