In one sense it depends on your purpose for having the Britannica. It has been argued by many, and I tend to agree, that the 11th /12th Edition (3 new volumes were produced in 1922 = 12th Edition) is one, if not the most interesting. It is interesting in that it gives you a grand picture of a world view that preceded but did not survive WW I.…[Read more]

My main reason is to add it to my book library and to be handed down to my son. I’m impressed by the English world preceding WWI and you’ve hit the nail on the head about it providing an overview of how things were thought about then. I’ll investigate Mr A J Jacobs also.

Nice! This edition would be a nice addition to your library. It is currently the most collectible Britannica. I’d be willing to bet that it will continue to be sought after in the future as well.
-
better get it now that the cost is affordable π

As to the first what you suggest, merging, sounds plausible. However, I’m not sure how one distinguishes between “working together” and truly being “merged” which I think you are hinting at in your question (merged or blended). My suspicion is that what we call consciousness is a result of a particular “ability” (the conversion of sensory input…[Read more]

… Hi … following one from your very interesting reply … it seems to me there exists a nasty entity that is looking for a way to manipulate our universe. I think it’s not a natural resident of our universe and your reference to triadic logic gave me a clearer reason why. The thing is not hard-wired to our cosmos as you so well put it.…[Read more]

HI Scarmoge .. .thanks for the conclusion. So, if cognition could be something other than computation, is it possible that the the only way for AI to be cognitive is for it to either be merged or blended with a cognitive entity (such a human being) OR, for it to be taken over or possessed by a cognitive entity (such as a non-corporeal consciousness)?

Absolutely a topic of interest for not only myself but quite a few others in a number of fields as well. I hope that folks would read all the way to the end of this article where they would read “The mind canβt be just a computer, GΓΆdel demonstrated that fact and Turing tried to live with it.” A thread to follow: Lucas, J. It boggles my mind how so many people have forgotten, or worse, deny the implications that surround WTC Building 7. Never Forget, and hopefully, Never Repeat.

I have to agree ML .. No one that I know .. in this regional area .. have even heard of Building 7 .. Makes me angry ..

Agreed. Yesterday as I wrote the date on so many documents, I wondered how many other people were thinking of all those who lost their lives in 2001.

The problem is, as I’ve tried to show many times when talking about ancestral vs original sin, is that we do not inherit the moral culpability of our ancestors. In other words, the cultural logic behind ANY argument for reparations, etc., is a theological error…

The problem with tranquilizer guns in a public order environment is that they are short-range (probably 50 yards max), the darts fly at low velocity and may not penetrate clothing, and the tranquilizing agent may take an unacceptably long time to take effect. In a shooting incident, law enforcement’s objective is to neutralize the threat with…[Read more]
