    The little woodpecker that drills away at the trees around here is back! He’s unafraid and lets me get close to watch…. Beautiful little bird!

    • The woodpecker (Picus) figures in archaic Roman mythology. The handsome Picus was a son of Saturn (an association with the Golden Age) and was sought after by Nymphs and Naiads, whom he rejected. But after rejecting the sorceress Circe she turned him into a woodpecker out of pique. He is also associated with the archaic Roman Mars, a figure more linked to agriculture and fertility than the later warlike Ares.
