The article discusses Pi in relation to the alleged asteroid threat. But there are wider implications: how could the Moon and Mars landings have taken place if they used the “wrong” value of Pi? Or am I missing something?

The whole issue of so-called irrational (non-decimal) numbers has to be reviewed, in ancient science these were considered as a sort of whole number, representing a proportion. Any conversion into their decimal approximation would have been considered a purely secondary issue.

I always find these occasions, usually dismissed as “merely formal”, to be full of little nuggets. The sight of the (presumably) outgoing Prime Minister playing lady-in-waiting to the Queen is especially hilarious. (Yes, I know that is what “protocol” demands…).

To me, “merely formal” implies ritual. I can’t elaborate, but my intuition tells me that Trump’s State Visit, May’s resignation and Brexit are all components of a major ritual, an inflection point.
