When Neil Armstrong descended the ladder of the LEM in July 1969 as he set foot upon the moon he uttered the famous phrase “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind”. What we heard was the phrase without the indefinite article “a”. Apparently there was a break in the transmission which gave us the incomplete version of this momentous phrase. Such are the vicissitudes of broadcasting from such great a distance. I’m wondering if this “glitch” in the transmission was deliberate. Would such a grammatically ambiguous pronouncement have an effect on the whole venture ? Would the allusion to imperfectly contracting or measuring the Deep be a way of assuaging the powers that set up the treaty-boundry and thus misrepresenting the true intent of the mission ?
It’s a strange grammar/grimoire for the NASA magickians to choose, nicht wahr ? I’m tempted to invoke LAM in this transposition of vowels but it may not work…
I’m not related to Farouk El-Baz as far as I know.
