Transgenderism, the Tarot and the Suffragettes; some wild thoughts.

The English occultist and artist Austin Osman Spare was a friend of and fellow RCA student with Emily Pankhurst between 1902 – 1906.
Spare is somewhat notorious for his various depictions of the Pandrogyne, and Pankhurst is celebrated for her promulgation of political sex-equality.
Nothing surprising there. But Spare was also the creator of a version of the Tarot which seems to have prefigured the idea of holograms, and he also drew visual depictions of low frequency longitudinal waves within pictorial tableaux embedded in certain arrangements of Tarot cards. Furthermore Spare painted some pictures he described as ‘Time Mirrors’ in which certain female forms conjugated themselves from the past to become vivified in the perceptions of future male observers.
Was Pankhurst a theosophist ? Are there some dots here begging to be connected ?

    • I don’t know about Pankhurst but Annie Besant, who led the Theosophical Society in its post-Blavatsky phase, certainly shared the themes of “women’s rights”. Recommended reading: “The Theosophical Enlightenment” by Joscelyn Godwin, a cultural history starting from the original, less famous 18th century Theosophers, going on to Illuminism and through to Blavatsky and her Theosophists.

      • If I recommended to you reading Spare I might be accused of stretching the “devil’s membrane” too far.

    • Emmeline Pankhurst’s daughter was very Eugenically minded.. apparently.. which, if true, would be funny seeing her mother’s views on Germans..
