Thinking about the latest trend of superhero movies and Nietzsche’s ubermensch.

    • Where do you think Benedict Cummerbund or whatever his name is, as Dr Strange, fits in to your thinking? By the way, wanna be friends?

      • Well, Dr. Strange is certainly interesting. An ubermensch with leaning towards Eastern mysticism and black magic just about gives away the game. He gets his spells from celestial deities, and IIRC he forms a covenant with them – very telling. Of course, some of Dr. Strange’s powers are locked in material things – his amulet and cloak and so on, they do kind of stay on the reservation as Dr. F would say. And part of his Ethos is being a brain surgeon, so there are still elitist qualifications, appeals to authority etc. The backstory is the typical monomyth, but the character of the Ancient One in the Himalayas is interesting.

I have to confess I don’t know too much about Bernardo Cabbagepatch. I saw him in the BBC Sherlock series, which was pretty good. He has relatives who were military officers and consuls, probably a loyal family with some insiders. I do know that he taught English to Tibetan monks for a year before becoming an actor. That would probably be the best connection between Dr. Strange and Cabbagepatch that I know of.

        • Spells from celestial deities eh? Sounds like Dee and Kelly. I wonder if there’s a Mrs Dr Strange.
I did see Mr Cabbagepatch playing Van Gogh in a BBC production a few years ago and he was pretty good in that. I don’t go to the movies all that much. I prefer dvd’s at home so I can smoke, scratch my bum and stretch my legs. But I’m quite happy to watch a superhero movie. There are some interesting themes, Iron Man/Tony Stark with his fusion device being one. And I’ll watch Scarlett Johansson don the Black Widow outfit anytime.
