Yes! I got half way and couldn’t read another shoe and wardrobe description. If we go back to the 20’s and 30’s the literature is nothing like Greenwood’s entertrainment style of easy reading that is so popular today. Writers like Du Maurier, Lee, and Mitchell were good writers, and told stories that made you think. At the very least you could actually finish reading one of their novels without feeling coerced to do so because you paid some money for the book.

I knew it would be a frilly story. I just didn’t expect to find it so cumbersome to keep visualising every colour Phryne decided to wear. That might be why the stories were so easy to adapt to television. The props were already clearly described in the narrative.
