As a kid my favorite thing Bob would do is take his freshly cleaned brush and say, when he wanted the excess water out of it, “Now we’re going to beat the devil out of it.”

      • Or… when he just finished making a beautiful background, he’d say something to the effect, “Okay, we’re going to need a bit of courage now.” As he’d then proceed to paint a huge black line right down the canvas. Worry not though, it always became some epic sort of tree! Bob was one of the best TV personalities, by far.

        • I couldn’t agree more ML .. I have only recently bumped into this man and his body of work .. And I have to say .. he had me straight away .. He took me back to a time where things were more civilised and dignified .. He made it all look SO damn easy .. My Bob Ross Master Paint Set is on its way to Straya as we speak .. I can’t wait .. And…

For one, or many, to lose their Hope in Reconciliation, especially those who believe in the tenant of Forgiveness, may be one of our greatest losses.

I must say that Rene Girard’s thesis on Mimetic Conflict becomes truer everyday! The real question is that if we continue down this path, which is by no means compulsory, who, or better said in t…[Read more]

          • In the long run, I always have hope. I want to say all good things are possible in the short to medium term too, but I don’t believe it at the moment. Might it be helpful to affirm it, whether or not I believe it? Is belief that your intention is possible a prerequisite for it to have a positive effect on the field? (I honestly have no idea,…

“Congressional clown show”. I second that nice little phrase. My hope is that the vote tallying process will be seriously dealt with as it seems likely at this point that neither party will except outcomes if we cannot bring simplistic clarity into how votes are counted. It seems that an analog process may be the easiest way to bring tra…[Read more]

Insanity has been misconstrued as patriotism, while delusions of political grandeur have been mistaken for reality. This applies to both sides of that wretched isle.

                • Geeeez whinny tell them what you really think. You boys over there in the US have some SERIOUS S**T happening and the whole world is watching.

                • The little bit of news I’ve subjected myself to recently, both foreign and domestic, ignores the serious part and wails about what’s theater (comparatively tame theater, at that). The theater is a shriek-o-meter-amplified protest and a Congressional clown show. The serious part is that the institutions of government and the voting process…

The idea that we should hold, or better yet, expect private (disputable, I know) tech platforms to maintain a “fair” standard is total delusion at this point, and probably always has been.

Well, I’ll stand by my democracy comment: we’re living in it. Though, voting machines seem to throw a wrench in the whole inevitably doomed machine. A “democratic republic” seems more of an oxymoron to me, but anyhow. And yes, we are certainly lacking a few good Ciceros these days, sadly.

I can further hear all those grouchy old school Federalists saying, “See, we told you. Those States are just too dang powerful. First it was that ever ill-defined Assumption of Powers thing, you know, that ole’ Police Powers thing that we never chose to define. And now this, my God.”

But this is a democracy, Billy. This is what a (liberal) democracy is, or it’s what it inevitably leads to. I believe what we’re missing, or maybe, longing for, is what Plato, then Aristotle, then what Cicero describes as the “Res Publica”.

                                    • I can further hear all those grouchy old school Federalists saying, “See, we told you. Those States are just too dang powerful. • If there’s a democracy or a democratic republic lurking somewhere in the District of Columbia, I haven’t seen it. Now, an oligarchy, yep–got it in spades.

You can’t have a “res publica” without a few Ciceros, and I haven’t seen many of them roaming around either.
