I can’t speak for merchant sailors on the cargo ship. On US Navy they typically run 3-4 shifts on most all posts. Sailors man their station while other members sleep or relax on their off time just like most normal civilian jobs. Certain ships like submarines and aircraft operate as if they are in an actual war.
